FAQs: Specialist Referrals

Why might my pet need a referral to see a specialist? In some cases, your pet may require a level of care that goes beyond the scope of general practice. A referral to a specialist ensures that your pet receives expert treatment for specific conditions that require advanced diagnostics or surgery.

Who is your preferred referral centre? Our preferred referral centre is The Ralph Veterinary Referral Centre. We work closely with them because they are a multidisciplinary team with expertise across a wide range of specialties. They are highly efficient, welcoming to new cases, and can accept urgent referrals, providing timely care for your pet. Their communication is exceptional, ensuring that we and you are kept fully updated on your pet’s condition and treatment plan.

When will my pet be referred to a specialist at The Ralph? Typically, we will refer your pet to The Ralph if they require specialist care within the scope of their expertise. However, if your pet requires treatment that The Ralph is unable to provide, we will discuss alternative options with you. The Ralph is our primary referral centre, unless there is a specific need for a different facility.

What is the referral process like? Once your pet has been assessed, if a referral is necessary, we will provide all the relevant information and send the referral to The Ralph on your behalf. You’ll be contacted by their team to arrange an appointment. The process is straightforward and designed to make things as convenient for you and your pet as possible.

What should I expect in terms of costs for a referral? Consultations: Referrals for consultations generally start at £500. This is the cost for an initial assessment with the specialist. Referral Work-Up: If your pet requires further diagnostics or a more comprehensive treatment plan, the cost of a full referral work-up usually starts around £3000. This covers a range of tests, imaging, and treatments required for a thorough diagnosis. Please note: Costs may vary depending on the complexity of the case and specific treatment requirements. We recommend contacting The Ralph directly for a more detailed estimate once your referral is confirmed, as we are not directly involved with their pricing.

Will my pet’s insurance cover the referral costs? Insurance claims and management of insurance needs should be handled directly between you and your insurance company, as well as the referral centre. We are unable to advise or manage insurance claims for you. Please make sure to check your pet's policy and inform your insurance provider of the referral details.

What if I have a special request or need a different referral centre? If you have any specific requirements that The Ralph cannot accommodate, we are happy to discuss alternative referral options with you. We will assist in finding a suitable specialist or centre that meets your pet’s needs.

How do I arrange a referral for my pet? A specialist referral must be completed by ourselves after seeing your pet for a consultation. There is an administration charge of £25 for referrals
